Time for the annual Worst GM in 2005 award, given annually to the GM who is the most idiotic or has performed the biggest losing moves of the past year.


This year's nominees:

Brian "Clueless" Cashman, NY Yankees
Notable 05 achievements with a mere 200 Million dollars:
- Signed Jaret Wright to a 3 year 21 M contract
- signed Pavano to a 4 year 40M contract
- "improved" 2b with the acquisition of Tony Womack
- Re-acquired Tino Martinez
- involved in the signing of RJ
- has rebult the Yankee pitching staff into the all-DL, all lame excuse squad.
- Decided to hold onto Wang...he promptly goes out and blows out his arm.



Tim Purpura, Houston Astros
05 accomplishments:
-watched Kent and Beltran walked...replaced with nada.



Jim Hendry, Chicago Cubs
- Sosa traded for Hairston...Cubs still footing most of the bill.
- Alou walked
- Burnitz added
- Dusty Baker allowed to ruin one pitcher after another.
- closer, who needs a closer
- Corey Patterson implodes to AAA status.


Bill Bavasi, Seattle Mariners
-showing a Cashman like ability to pick losers, signed Beltre and Sexson to big contracts.
- Miguel Olivo and Dan Wilson are starting Cs
- Pitching, who needs pitching when you have Moyer and Piniero as your aces.


Dan O'Brien Reds
-Graves released
-Eric Milton signed
-Austin Kearns sent to the minors

I'm just going to post what I disagree with...

involved in the signing of RJ

Yankees needed a top line starting pitcher for the playoffs, RJ hasn't been as good as expected but there is no reason he cannot carry that team through the playoffs if he gets his slider working.

Holding him is the right choice, the fact he got injured doesn't make it the wrong one, its just unfortunate.

Youth movement, the team isn't doing that badly about the same record as they had last year at the break. I'm sure if they could afford to replace kent and beltran they would have.

Sosa is useless, Alou was not a good risk to sign, Burnitz has been fine this year, Dempster is doing fine as the closer and Patterson is hardly the GM's fault. Baker and the pitchers I agree with.

Sexson has been fine this year, especially considering he missed over half a year which tends to hurt a players numbers, Beltre was just a bad signing.

Nothing wrong with Olivo as their C, he just didn't get off to a good start.
Piniero, Meche, Moyer, Madritsch should have been a decent base of a rotation, they did need one more top of the line starter though. Injuries are mostly to blame for their pitching problems.

Graves hasn't been good since 2002, releasing him was no big deal, he had one decent half last year and they should have been selling high during it. Kearns hasn't done anything to show he deserves to be in the majors since the 2nd month of his first season, Milton's contract was a joke, I agree with you there.


While I disagree wtih over half of your post I do agree that Cashman is the worst of them.

You forgot ...

* Traded away Vazquez who is sporting a 1.16 WHIP

* Traded away Weaver who is sporting a 1.24 WHIP

* Traded away one of his best setup men for two scrub starters with an ERA around 6.00

* Allows an admitted Steriod Junkie to dictate to him thru the Media what is, and isn't going to happen.

in defense of hendry, the closers that were available if i recall were percival (injured), benitez (injured) and kolb (sucks). he also managed to dump latroy for j.williams and aardsma.

whoever is running the nationals may get a vote. did good by getting jose guillen but signing christian (.198 ba) guzman and vinny castilla to multi year deals was inexscusable not to mention they forfeited draft picks to get those players.
