If anyone cares, the game I was referring to does exist! June 4-1989, the Sox were up 10-0 after six and lost the game 13-11. Smith didn't do all the damage, but did give up the lead in the ninth, by allowing 4 runs in 1/3 of an inning.
I remember hearing that game on the radio and thinking it was just impossible. Go Sox!
