Will Urbina be traded?

Postby Robman » Tue Jun 10, 2003 12:28 am

I heard last week the Giants were interested, but haven't heard anything about it since. It seems like the Rangers would unload Urbina since they are already 17 games out and they have Cordero waiting in the wings.

I think he's almost certain to be traded before the deadline. What's unclear is whether he'd go somewhere where he'd be used as a setup guy, like the Yankees, or somewhere like SF, where he'd be the closer.

Yes, he will be traded. However, the price is too high right now. It will be July or so before any deal goes through (look for gonzalez and everett to go as well, and maybe chan ho park...lol..ok, not chan ho, but i wish).

the Giants have Worrell, but Rodriguez and Nathan have not nailed down the setup man roles well at all. The Giants would LOVE to move Worrell to setup man and have Urbina at closer, then use Rodriguez and Nathan as situational guys. That's Worrell's destiny for next year anyway when Nen comes back, so they have no qualms about moving him back, I'd say.

Yeah, in order for the Giants to improve their bullpen and get more solid setup guys, they basically have no other option than to go after Benitez or Urbina. There really aren't that many quality setup guys that you can get on the trade market, and Worrell is a top notch setup guy, so they have to get a closer instead. There's no way Worrell would close over Urbina or Benitez if they get him.

newspapers

Postby lab_rats » Tue Jun 10, 2003 4:25 pm

some newspaper articles from the east coast:
http://www.nj.com/yankees/ledger/index. ... 315300.xml
http://www.nypost.com/sports/yankees/36295.htm

in light of these articles, would you jump the gun and try to trade UU for something of value, or do you still believe that he is SF bound?? someone in my league has already jumped on cordrero!

If you can get reasonable value for Urbina, like another closer that is of similar value, I'd do it. For example, if you can get Sasaki, Koch, Isringhausen or possibly Mesa, it would likely be worth it because the risk wouldn't be as great. However, I wouldn't trade him away for a crap closer like Brandon Lyon or Mike DeJean either.

saves

Postby lab_rats » Tue Jun 10, 2003 4:50 pm

saves are a tight race in my league. we have 3 RP slots and most everyone has 3 closers. SP/RP closers are a premium, though biddle and lyon are no gagne-smoltz. to lose UU to middle relief would spell disaster for our team, but to have him close for the giants would certainly be a bonus. mesa is a viable option. which is riskier, holding onto UU or trading away for mesa?
