Dude, have you read this thread? Sheff's not playing because of lack-of-pay, he's not playing because it's not his job. Let's say you work in IT, and your boss says, "Well, we'd like to wire this new civic building this weekend. No pay, but it's good exposure for the company." Wouldn't you feel perfectly entitled to say no?
Granted, Sheff doesn't have great "interpersonal skills", but to paraphrase Charles Barkley a few years back, he's not paid to be a role model. He's paid to smack the ball 162 days a year.
Big Papi's Pimps wrote:This is just an amusing little story about Sheff. He made an appearence Wed. night at Bronson Arroyo's record release party at the Avalon in Boston. Upon spotting him, Hillman from WAAF (a local rock station and the party's MC) said "What the hell is Gary Sheffield doing here? Get the hell out of here!!!" Security quickly escorted Sheffield out of the venue.
What was this psycho thinking?? He shows up at a party with hundreds of drunk Red Sox fans and whole Red Sox team, whom he had called out in a newspaper article earlier in the week. Was he looking for a fight??
Where did you hear this? Bernie Williams was there, and he got some light applause. I see no reason why Sheff can't go to the Avalon to see Arroyo perform.

Do you have a link?
I heard it on the radio this morning. The guy who was the MC at the party is a radio DJ. He definately said it was Sheffield, but maybe he got mixed up and meant to say it was Williams. That would make more sense. I know Sheff is crazy, but I don't think anybody would be that stupid. And I think security escorted him away for his own safety.

I agree, what does this have to do with Sheff's comments or personality?

i was just going to make the same point. it could mean sheff might not be the sharpest tool in the shed or that he actually takes a charitable view on red sox fans, but by no means does it make him a dick. and there's a good argument for the other way... if he went, he's supporting a red sox pitcher and figures that he has no personal animosity to red sox nation and expects the same.
funny story, though. and not something i would choose to do as sheff (or jeff nelson or the other joker involved in the bullpen scuffle).

It really doesn't matter, the DR's dream team is going to crush the US with or without Sheff.
1. he is getting older.
2. he is already at the tail end of his career.
3. he has been playing with/through injuries.
4. this game is not an official MLB game, so i do not blame him.
5. he is right there are others that feel like he does.
actually, he comes off as reasonable in this wash. post quote:
"Someone asked Sheffield if he didn't feel a sense of nationalism. What about the Olympics? he was asked. Doesn't he believe in the Olympics? Doesn't he believe in playing for his country?
"There's a big difference," he said. "If I won a medal for my country for the Olympics that's different. This is something you just made up.""
