It sounded like a crazy idea to me until now, but I was just looking over All-time Yankee stats, and I hadn't realized until now exactly how much he's accomplished in the pinstripes. He's top-10 in most offensive categories, and if you're looking at career as a whole, his doesn't stack up too bad at all with some of the other guys with retired numbers. And playing CF for a dynasty has to mean something. What do you guys think? Take a look at the two links below. What say you?
Wow, very suprising as a matter of fact. I never knew how well Bernie's career stats stacked up to the All-time Yankee greats. Shifted my opinion from an emphatic "No way!" to a borderline yes.

Yeah, I didn't even realize it until now either. A solid .300 average, .002 over Mantle is what's one of the most impressive things, especially with these past couple of years bringing his average down. I think since he's declined recently, we've all forgotten what he's done during the "glory days". He's top 10 in a whole bunch of important offenseive categories including things like total bases, walks, sac flys, along with the obvious RBI, homer, hits, etc.
Bernie, Jeter, and Pettitte are the three active players whose numbers I would retire if I were in the Yankees front office. Bernie and Jeter were lineup rocks while Pettitte's postseason heroics helped the team win 4 championships. I vote yes.

Too bad DARRELL MAY got Pettitte's number.
I guess it could still be retired, but I doubt it if they just gave it away to a nobody like that.

I completely agree. I think it's because of the scrutiny he's gotten lately, but Bernie was always a very underrated player and never got the credit he deserved for the Yankees success in the 90s if you ask me. His regular season numbers from '95-''02 were superb, and his post-season line, while not overly impressive, shows he wasn't a push over when it mattered the most. He, along with Pettite probably, were my favorite Yankees of that great run of the late '90s.

If I'm not mistaken, Bernie holds a bunch of postseason HR records. Obviously the opportunity has to be there but he got it done.
Truly a great player and I can't wait for them to retire his number.
