I ask because my sister just got her B.A. in English and is currently in the credentials program to become a teacher. She is a student teacher in the mornings then takes classes in the afternoon into night. It's hard for her to work because she is busy Mon-Fri all day.
Now that its summer she has 1-2 months off until school starts back up. She will be a long term sub for the teacher she student teaches for while on maternity leave for 6 weeks to start the upcoming school year. My dad told her she has to work if she doesn't want to pay rent, and she has submitted about 20-30 applications from offices to Target. Most of the places were like Target, Circuit City, Staples, Kohl's, Ross, TJ Max, Regal Cinemas...she is just looking for anything until she starts school again.
She works 6 hours a week at this small tutoring center, but they don't have the clients to keep her more hours.
She worked for Old Navy for 4 years and left there making about $9 an hour. She then worked for a lawyer for 2 years where she made $14 an hour...
None of these places are hiring her and she has followed up and even had interviews, but no luck. She said she is getting the vibe that she is overqualified or made too much at past jobs.
My dad is getting mad and started charging her $300 a month in rent, which she has to pay with her student loans, since she isn't working.
They don't want to pay her what she's worth and they don't believe she will be happy in her job. Not to mention that she's only availiable for the next two months. I'd say that's the biggest reason why no one is interested. By the time they get her trained, she's going to quit. Doesn't make sense to pay her and train her if they know she's not going to stick around.
Tough spot to be in .
Your dad is really taking her student loan money as rent ? Lol. Probably not funny at all, but I can't help but chuckle.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....

I laugh too, but I feel bad for her. I see his point. She has a degree and doesn't want to see her sit around the house all day for the summer, but it's not as easy as he thinks. He told her that she has a BA so it shouldn't be hard to find a job, but hes being short sighted for the exact reasons you mentioned.

Exactly. She should take all the jobs off her resume except for one or two, take off the degree, and say she needs a part time job for atleast a year. Then do her 2 months and quit.
You don't owe your employer anything, because they will fire you if it suits there needs without hesitation.
Cynical, but realistic. Do what you have to do for yourself, atleast concerning employment.

If you don't drool on yourself and you have basic motor functions you're probably "over-qualified".
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
