why do you think pavano is so good. since when does a career .500 pitcher get so much respect from you
I didn't think Pavano was that great when they signed him to be completely honest. But given the market and the guys who were available I thought he was probably the best guy to sign. He had a career year, he threw moderately hard (low to mid 90's) and had great movement last year plus from what I can remember he was good in the 2nd half of 2003 and was tremendous in the playoffs including a great start against the Yanks in the stadium in the WS. Guys who can pitch at the stadium are at a premium (as we have witnessed recently with Vazquez, Loaiza, RJ, etc...). But for some reason his velocity has gone down 4-5 mph and he can't pitch in the stadium. How the hell were the Yanks supposed to see that one coming? As for his contract...10 Million per with Clement getting 8.5, Benson getting just short of 8, and Odalis getting 8ish, I don't think Pavano at 10 per was really that much of a stretch. Maybe a little high but with the market the way it was I don't think they overpaid. Sure I'm pissed at him now and I boo the hell out of him when I get the chance but at the time I thought it was a good signing and I don't think Cash got ripped off and I'll defend my opinion at the time with the reasoning I had for it even though it turns out I've been very very wrong. The Jaret Wright signing was an abortion and I was screaming for them to get Lieber back instead.

You think Lawton and his $7.75 million warrant a prospect?
And you call Cashman clueless?

Yeah, that cash is going to be a lot for a team to swallow...I have to assume the Pirates want to move Lawton since K-raig will be coming back soon (which will leave us with no lead off hitter ).
The Pirates are idiots when it comes to trading 90% of the time (see Schmidt, Ramirez, etc. etc.), but I'll bet they will want a decent return on a player that essentially would be part of the Jason Kendall deal. Who that is, I have no idea.
