Time for some front office trades. Sabean and Tidrow to Japan for future draft picks who actually stay and play.

SF isn't going to compete this year and chances are that Schmidt isn't coming back next year. Why not trade him to a contender for some prospects? They should be able to get more for him now then they could in the draft.

Schmidt has a club option for 2006 and if he's still with the club by the end of the year, I can see the Giants resigning him for one more. The Giants will not trade Schmidt for prospects. They haven't rebiult since hitting their stride in 1997 and they won't until Bonds retires. This is simply because Bonds will not last through a prospect rebiulding campaign. If they trade Schmidt this year, it would have to be for pitchers and players who can help them now. Otherwise, when Bonds comes back next year, they would be back to square one without Schmidt and even less of chance to win the WS.

Schmidt is not worth $10.5M. He is also not worth the $3M buyout. I hate to think of it in this way, but, it would be the best for the Giants. Why prolong the inevitable. The Giants would be better suited to go ahead with a trade for a quality starter and prospects to go along with Barry if/when he returns. This team has been playing the last three years for one more chance.
NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
It's time to begin the future. Barry should just hope any new additions can produce better results than the aged help he's been receiving.
I think Sabaen and Coletti should get the updated player evaluations and stop using 2000's. There are some young guys out there that can do the job as well or better.

I agree that their shrinking window of opportunity is pretty much closed. The fact that they didn't win it in 2002 was a sign things weren't going to get better. But lets face it, when you know you can only have the best hitter on earth (and a cash cow to boot) for two or three years more years, you just have to take advantage of it and go for it every year.

Soxcess11 wrote:as a Sox fan, I have to disagree, the pitching staff or should I say the 2 Cubans (Contreras and Hernandez) or pretty big question marks right now, El Duque can't decide if he wants to pitch or not and Contreras can't get bad thoughts out of his head, the Sox could easily use a Jason Schmidt and send either Contreras or El Duque to the bullpen, especially if they only have to give up maybe a Carl Everett, Brandon McCarthy or some other minor league prospect. If the Sox get this deal done life will be good on the South side, and that quote about the trade rumor being denied, that was Ozzie Guillen saying that Kenny Williams has not mentioned any of it to him

Right on ;-D One of the problems is that SF is asking for players based on Schmidt's past numbers than asking for a realistic price based on his mediocre year. Supposedly they are asking for a ton though this might change as 7/31 nears.
