I just read an article in which Torre said that he promised Weaver a starting spot for this season (he made the promise last year). It then quoted him this year as saying that he won't go back on his word and he expects Weaver to be a Yankee starter for several years.
unfortunetly preseason promises mean very little. I would really like to count on it , I've had him on my team the last two years, but he scares me this year. I don't know if I should keep him or cut him loose.
I suspect Weaver will start. Idon't think Torre's players like him because he lies to them. The quote was something like "I made a promise to him and I can't go back on my word". However this is proffesional sports so you never know.
Sorry, but barring injuries to more expensive/older starters, Weaver's appearances will be in relief.
Torre wants to keep his word, but with more expensive talent with shorter shelf lives, he might have to go with the hand dealt to him from George.
It's not fair as Weaver's a real talent, but Steinbrenner's gone off the deep end this season.
You may remember him as Joe the Policeman from the "What's Goin' Down?" episode of That's My Momma! Please welcome, Jackson Heights' own, Mr. Randy Watson! Sexual Chocolate!!!
How is he going to open the season as a starter?
Clemens, Contreras, Pettitte, Mussina, and Wells.
With those guys is Torre saying he's going with a 6 man rotation?
Wells has a good chance to play himself out of the rotation or get injured, so I do think Weaver could enter the rotation at some point during this season. Then does he remain there? Who knows?

Weaver will be in the rotation at some point, but I don't think he's a guy you can count on very much...maybe a guy you pick up in the last few rds who helps you win the league?
i think we should read more into this than what is being said. It's true that the Yankees have all those pitchers but MAYBE Torre said that knowing that there is a deal going on to trade one of the 5 and thus open a spot for weaver. Just a thought. I didn't read that anywhere but I know they have been looking to shop Pettite for some time now.

I think Weaver is going to get the short end of the stick this year. It sucks cause I like Weaver. You know Clemans and Mussina and Pettite are going to start, you didn't sign Contreras to come out of the bullpen, because he might be old as hell also, wells had a great season last year, he starts. That means long relief for the ex tiger.
