Unit pitching on 3 days rest

Postby nsulham » Mon Jul 04, 2005 11:18 am

I know the Yanks have had rotation issues lately but isn't this sort of playing with fire? He hasn't pitched on 3 days rest since the 97 postseason and I'd hardly say he is the horse he was back then. Hopefully for his sake and the team's sake he makes it out of that start scot-free.

Actually I forgot to factor in the rest he'll get over the break so I guess it's not a HUGE deal but still something worth keeping an eye on I would think.

For him I know it's not. Hell any pitcher will take the ball anytime they can but given he's been banged up, plus he's not exactly a young pup anymore, it's at least something to consider.

"It will be good for me to get out there after a lousy start a couple of days ago," said Johnson, who was hit for seven runs in five innings on Friday against the Tigers. "I'm trying to do whatever to get me on track and get the team a win."

"I think he likes the fact that he doesn't have to wait until Thursday to pitch," said manager Joe Torre. "He embraced that when we mentioned it the other day."

Johnson is 7-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 17 starts this season, already allowing 18 home runs -- his total from 2004. He is winless in his last three starts, getting hit for seven runs in two of those outings.

"I just want to help this team win," Johnson said. "Obviously, I haven't done what I'd like to do to get where I want to be and where the team would like to be."

Johnson was reminded that he came out of the bullpen in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series on no days' rest, having started Game 6 for Arizona.

"That was in the World Series," he said.

The lefty was then told that he started on short rest in the 1997 playoffs, also going on three days' rest in the one-game playoff for the American League West title between the Mariners and Angels in 1995.

"That was back when I was young," said a smiling Johnson.

Johnson, who threw 80 pitches on Friday, had offered to start last Wednesday on two days' rest when he learned that Mike Mussina was feeling under the weather. The game was rained out, but Torre said that Mussina would have taken the mound.

"Whatever it takes," the Unit said. "I'll go out and try to help us win a game."

Regardless of how he's slumped, you start Unit every time he's on the bump. You just do. In my book, at least. Guys like Santana, Clemens, Oswalt, Pedro, etc. you have them on your team to start 35 times; it's what you draft/trade for them for. To make managing easier. One less player you have to consider benching here and there.

What? Yes he can. He hasn't sucked, he's been human. Unit is normally off the charts, and now he's not throwing like he's a machine and he sucks? Take that Yankee Pride banner down. :-t
