Whom to drop

Postby flloyd » Fri Jun 06, 2003 1:12 pm

I want to pick up Ensberg and need to drop one player in a 5x5 10 team non-keeper league. Who would you drop? Keep in mind that I am currently tring to work a deal of Rolen and E. Young for A. Boone so I have A. Boone and Ensberg rather than Rolen and A. Gonzalez (FLA). That also means that I woul move Cat to 2nd. I just want to pick up Ensberg NOW before someone else does.

C Posada, Jorge (C-NYY)
1B Sexson, Richie (1B-Mil)
2B Young, Eric (2B-Mil)
3B Rolen, Scott (3B-StL)
SS Gonzalez, Alex (SS-Fla)
OF Patterson, Corey (CF-ChC)
OF Payton, Jay (CF, LF-Col)
OF Catalanotto, Frank (LF, 2B, 1B, RF-Tor)
Util Thome, Jim (1B, DH-Phi)
Bench Guerrero, Vladimir (RF-Mon)
Bench Jones, Jacque (LF-Min)
DL Erstad, DarinDL (CF-Ana)

SP Wolf, Randy (SP-Phi)
SP Millwood, Kevin (SP-Phi)
RP Smoltz, John (RP-Atl)
RP Mesa, Jose (RP-Phi)
P Nomo, Hideo (SP-LA)
P Dotel, Octavio (RP-Hou)
P Myers, Brett (SP-Phi)
Bench Wakefield, Tim (RP, SP-Bos)
Bench Donnelly, Brendan (RP-Ana)
Bench Pineiro, Joel (SP, RP-Sea)

Here is where I stand:

3rd 3 4 5 6 2 4.5 9 9 9 10 61.5

All of your hitters except maybe Gonzalez are too good to drop. I would drop Donnelly if I had to choose one, because Percival will be activated tomorrow and he won't be getting save chances.

That said, the trade you want to do is inadvisable. Rolen is much more valuable than A.Boone, and it would be a bad idea to trade them straight up let alone throw in a second player to get him. Boone will get steals, homers and RBIs, but he usually hits for around a .260 average and is extremely streaky. Other than Pujols, Rolen is the best 3B in the league and will hit for average and power. Also, keep in mind that Ensberg is not getting all the playing time at 3B, and he is still the backup to Blum at that position. So if you make that trade, you are going from having a full time 3B to a part time/platoon 3B and trading a superior player for an inferior one. If you do it, that's a terrible move.
