With Webb coming back for his start this weekend, I need to figure out who I want to drop to take him off the DL, and I need some advice. The frontrunners are Livan Hernandez (my weakest pitcher) and Eric Byrnes (who looks like he's cooling off and was essentially a fifth outfielder and UT player for me while Martinez was benched for interleague play). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Here's my roster:
C: LoDuca (with Piazza on the DL)
1B: Casey
2B: Vidro
SS: Renteria
3B: Glaus
OF: Pierre, Winn, Giles, Burnitz, Byrnes
Util: Edgar Martinez
SP: Zito, Lieter, Oswalt, Willis, Lohse, L. Hernandez, (Webb on the DL)
RP: Guardado, Kim, Julio, Looper
I would drop Hernandez or Willis, but Webb isn't really much better than either of those, in fact all three are either unproven or inconsistent. I would leave Webb on your DL and not put him in your active lineup for his first start back, because using a pitcher, especially a rookie coming right off the DL is asking for trouble. If he does fine on Saturday, activate him for his next start but use the pitchers you have in the meantime, but if he struggles, wait until he has a good start or two before activating him.
I would drop hernandez. Putting webb on the dl and leaving him there is good advice, that way you can take a few starts to evaluate him without him using up a roster spot
I agree on both parts. There is no way that Willis is leaving my team unless he falls back down to earth (hopefully, that won't happen). And I want to start Webb against Cleveland also. Once I free him up from the DL, I plan to pick up Phil Nevin and stash him there in the vacated spot.
