What is Happening to Johan Santana?

His ERA has been higher than it should have been. A little unlucky.
Everyone has a few bad games now and then. His stats aren't that bad and he hasn't truly had a hot streak yet.

My apologies. I have a nephew named Anfernee, and I know how mad he gets when I call him Anthony. Almost as mad as I get when I think about the fact that my sister named him Anfernee.

I think Johan will be fine, as he's not done badly at all this year. However, people expecting him to repeat his 2nd half from last year doesn't make sense. Planning for a player to have an ERA around 1.20 and a Whip of .75 for the 2nd half probably isn't wise. I'm sure that ERA will come down though K's will be there, and he'll probably win 17-18 on the year.
...Boston papers now and then suffer a sharp flurry of arithmetic on this score; indeed, for Williams to have distributed all his hits so they did nobody else any good would constitute a feat of placement unparalleled in the annals of selfishness. -Updike

I thought that the reason for his slow start last year was that he'd had surgery in the off-season to remove a bone spur from his elbow. So I wouldn't necessarily classify him as a guy who's bad in the first half and good in the second half, since the reason for the disparity between his first half and second half stats was injury-related.

However, I do think he's getting a bit unlucky right now and it sounds like he's had some tough umps lately, so I think his numbers will end up looking better in the second half.

Yeah, obviously the ERA is a fluke. Methinks hes just getting his balls busted by a string of bad umps. :-b

Funny how people are complaining about Johan. Come on guys...

In the SD game the umpiring was horrible for both teams. Johan got pinched on a lot of close calls in VERY key situations. Even one time losing his cool and that is a rare event for him. The MIL game was just a case where he didn't have his best stuff and they always seem to play the Twins well.

If your worrying about Johan's preformance thus far you probably have other issues as a starting pitcher with 131 K's already is quite a good thing especially when the next closest has 117.

I think that after his 2nd half last year he had no where to go but down. I think that he will have a great 2nd half this year( Maybe not as dominant as last year's 2nd half) and Will Lead the Majors In K's and continue to have a WHIP Under 1 and an ERA of about 2.5-3 or so. I also think that interleague just messes with pitchers for whatever reason. You would think it was the opposite and the hitters would be at the disadvantage, but more times then not I swear Pitchers just get lit up during this stretch.

Nothing. He's ahead of his stats from last year. He's a second half pitcher. I'd be worried in late July if he doesn't win something like 8 in a row.
