Gange update 6/24

Postby Hit N Run22 » Fri Jun 24, 2005 10:58 pm

Eric Gagne's season-ending elbow surgery went better than expected Friday: The Los Angeles Dodgers' All-Star closer did not need a ligament replaced after all, and could return by spring training.

Originally expected to be out 12-to-14 months following several MRI exams, Gagne now faces about six months recovery time, and he could start throwing a baseball even earlier.

Gagne Does Not Undergo Tommy John Surgery

The Associated Press reports Los Angeles Dodgers CL Eric Gagne (elbow) didn't need Tommy John surgery after all. Gagne had surgery on his right elbow and the doctors found less damage than expected. The doctors found a slight amount of fraying from the original graft that was sutured when Gagne underwent Tommy John surgery in 1997. There were also a couple of nerves that had scarred down onto the graft, which was causing Gagne considerable discomfort. So the doctors did a little shaving in the area, which relieved the pressure those nerves were placing on the graft, and sutured a couple of spots. The ligament didn't need to be replaced.

He'll still miss the rest of the year, but he'll be out six months instead of 12-14 months and will be ready for spring training next year.

That's wonderful news! Especially good since the Dodgers won't have the opportunity to allow him to pitch with an injury that he overcompensates for and injures something else next year.
