The Missing Teammate

It's almost time to take the field,
A new game will begin.
Something today is not quite right,
But it's still not sunken in.

I look towards your locker,
Everything seems the same.
You're uniform is hanging,
Ready for the game.

But as I look around me,
There is silence all around.
Today DK's not coming,
I stare down at the ground.

I know the tears are coming,
I'm not ashamed to cry.
Dear God I have to ask you,
Why did you make my friend die?

He was still only 33,
A husband, dad, and friend.
He had so much to live for,
Why did it have to end?

Through my tears I wonder,
Is this all a dream?
Then the answer comes to me,
God wanted you on his team.

Although I'll always miss you,
There's no more need to cry.
I know your pitching big league,
For the Cardinals in the sky.
