mesa has reiterated that unless traded to a team on the east coast that will use him as a closer immediately pick up his 2006 option he will opt for retirement. that really limits the pool of potential buyers so he may just stick around in pittsburgh.
i have heard a few small rumors about everday eddie guardado moving on. seattle is pretty much out of the race.

I've heard about Guardado moving on too, with Putz most likely taking over closing duties at Safeco. Rumors about Wickman were surfacing before the Indians went on their tear; I doubt they're in a rush to break up the MLB's best current bullpen though.
I still wonder about Jorge Julio...He is a choke artist and although Valuable now can pretty much crash in burn in any pressure situation. The o's may need some more SP so I'd guess he's gone
Julio is an interesting idea to be heading out Baltimore, obviously he's lost his chance at the closer role there so he's getting to be pretty useless in the O pen. I did happen to see that the O's might be looking for a front line starter to start a playoff series (to quote baseball tonight) and that would Jason Schmitt, its possible that with all the Giant bullpen problems they could be interested, that could be a possible trade option there or course with a couple other guys tossed in.
"Brazoban hasn't been very impressive since Eric Gagne first returned from the DL last month. If it turns out that Gagne needs surgery, there's a real chance the Dodgers will end up trading for a closer."
Wonder if LA is in the marlet for a closer. Any closer for LA would have some big value.

That's been the general understanding after what happened last year, and I grabbed Putz at the end of the draft figuring Guardado was brittle.
However, Hargrove doesn't yet have the same faith Melvin had in Putz, who had a series of noteable blowups over the last few weeks and has been demoted from the prime set-up role. In fact (and I'm in Seattle, by the way) Hargrove has revealed virtually nothing while essentially using every member of the pen as interchangeable parts (Villone, Mateo, Putz, Hasegawa, Nelson, Thornton).
Eddie's replacement could be anyone ... the only safe bet is Soriano in '06 .
