Since it's the halfway point of the season, I looked at my team with the 2005 version of Todd Helton and how I'd be doing with the 2004 version of Todd Helton.
If I replace Helton-05 with a half-season's worth of Helton-04, my team moves up from 6th in the standings to 2nd, gaining 8 points in a 10-team roto league.
The other thing is, the #1 team in my league would drop 16.5 points (from way-out-in-front 1st place to 3rd place) if you replace his Brian Roberts-05 with a half-season's worth of Brian Roberts-04.
The #3 team in the league drops to 7th (losing 12.5 points) if you replace his Derrek Lee-05 with a half-season's worth of Derrek Lee-04.
It's just playing around with the numbers, but it shows what a huge difference 1 player can make when they are so far off their expected numbers (like Brian Roberts, Derrek Lee, and Todd Helton so far this year).
Roger Angell: I was talking with Bob Gibson and I said: 'Are you always this competitive?' He said: 'Oh, I think so. I got a three-year old daughter, and I've played about 500 games of tic-tac-toe with her and she hasn't beat me yet.'
