You're completely fine.
Trading a newbie a pitcher in a roto league when there's a month to go, and both you and him have used up all your pitchers' innings allowed, becuase he doesn't realize that..... Now that's taking advantage of a newbie.

You didn't do anything unethical. Just smart use of FA list. Of course, neither Maggs nor Bonds has done anything yet, so it may yet blow up in your face.
