Question about stolen bases...

Postby strong » Sat Jun 18, 2005 2:53 pm

Yesterday, with Wright on first and Reyes on second in the first inning, the Mets attempted a double steal. Reyes was called out at third and Wright ended up safe at second without a wild throw or error. Yet, Wright was not credited with a steal. The CBSsportsline ply-by-play lists it as a steal, but does not give him one in the box score. Is this considered fielder indifference? Yet, if Reyes had been safe, Wright would probably still get the steal, correct?
Anyone?

MLB Rules

(d) When a double or triple steal is attempted and one runner is thrown out before reaching and holding the base he is attempting to steal, no other runner shall be credited with a stolen base.

As said in this thread, if the front end of a double steal is thrown out then the backend isn't given a SB. However if Reyes would have made it they both would have been credited with a SB.

And I have both of them and need steals. Way to go Reyes!

It kind of makes sense: The catcher obviously can't throw out both guys, so it doesn't entirely make sense to give the safe guy credit when a decision was made to go for someone else. So I think it follows the same logic as a fielder's choice.
