Buehrle...

Postby beltrans_boy » Fri Jun 17, 2005 10:08 pm

As this guy works on his 2nd shutout in a row, here's my question: what's the perception of Buehrle at this point? He's 26 years old, and he's having an amazing season thus far. Has he finally reached elite-status? Who would you compare him to at this point? In years past, he's always been a nice 2nd starter, but it seems like this year, he's come into his own to become a real ace.

1. He doesn't throw many pitches, allowing him to work deep into games.
2. He doesn't walk many batters.
3. He doesn't give up many home runs
4. The White Sox can score with the best of 'em.
5. Chicago has a great bullpen.
6. The AL Central isn't exactly stacked with quality opposing pitching.

I realize the fantasy upside is *somewhat* limited because of the lack of K's, but those wins and ratios can make up for it...I'm very optimistic that he can keep this kind of performance up. He's always had the talent, and now it just seems like he's taken that extra step to that elite level of a top-10 or 15 pitcher.

Does he belong in the same breath as Beckett? Oswalt? Halladay? I'm just curious what the public perception of Buehrle's performance is thus far...

White Sox are 9th in the majors in runs scored.

Its never been an issue of his play on the road. In fact, I believe he has a sub 3.00 ERA on the road. But playing in that bandbox US Celluar inflated his numbers by a good margin. But this year, hes been lights out at home, and only ok on the road. Total reversal. I always thought he would be a great pitcher to own if he could master pitching in the Cell. Now he does that, but then his road numbers go up. Had they not, his ratios would be downright filthy.

Mark is great, he eats up a lot of innings and pitches the quickest games in the league. Is a mechanics pitcher who doesn't get much k's.

But he hasn't quite reached elite status. Maybe a couple of more years like he's having now, then it's possible.

Couple more years? He's been doing it his entire career. In six full years his ERA was only above 4 twice, rookie year and 2003. He's won at least 14 games in every season he's been a full time starter not to mention the guy is an absolute horse:

2001 - 221 IP
2002 - 239 IP
2003 - 230 IP
2004 - 245 IP

Low walks, average K ability, good run support, eats innings, great control... he's top 20 without a question, maybe even top 10. ;-D

Seems like Buehrle could continue to put up ace numbers as long as all those innings don't catch up to him to cause some arm problems. He doesn't have much of a history of that though (as far as I know). Too bad I traded Buehrle away earlier this year, although I am enjoying watching him succeed.
