Before I commence, I'd like to put in a plug for my father's website:
http://www.otrvinyl.com The website is filled with albums and 45's on sale from his own personal collection (over 1,000,000 items in collection).
Hope that doesn't bother the mods (pm me if it does, I'll remove the plug).
Anyway, it's very difficult for me to choose my five favorite bands because I feel like I'm doing other bands an injustice in selecting one over another. I also find myself slipping in bands who I think are better over bands who I particularly like more. So instead of an organized list, I'm just going to name a bunch of bands.
Counterfit is probably my favorite band. They're an indie group originally from Connecticut that relocated to Southern California (near my home). The band no longer plays; their drummer left the band to join Finch, who is another one of my favorite bands. A few other contemporary groups I enjoy are A.F.I., Minus the Bear, and Saosin (who I just saw live at Soma on Saturday).
As far as individual artists are concerned, I'd have to say Jimi Hendrix and Jack Johnson are my two favorites.
Then there's the 'artistic music'-savvy piece of me. From this part of me I really enjoy listening to Yes (the "Heart of the Sunrise" or "Nous Sommes Du Soleil" stuff), the Moody Blues, as well as Pink Floyd.
Past that I like what mostly everyone else likes. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin are always fine by me.
There are 1000's of bands/artists I've left out; I feel bad! Oh well, you get a rough blueprint of what I like.
Led Zeppelin

The rest, in no particular order Pink Floyd
Beatles (though I'm not a huge fan really)
Eagles
Seger
Elton John (the early 70s stuff only)
Those are really the only bands I like all their stuff. I've got dozens of other groups that I like a couple of songs or maybe most of an album, but they don't really make the cut as a favorite band if that makes any sense.
Not really 5 or anything but here goes:
Bands:
RHCP
Sublime
Zepplin
Modest Mouse
Beatles
Rappers:
Pretty much the whole quannum crew, but in particular Blackalicious (composed of the duo of Gift of Gab and Cheif XCel. Gift of Gab is one of the most unappreciated and highly talented lyricists ever, download/buy the song alphabet aerobics and his whole solo album 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up, my favorite songs on that CD are way of the light and evolution.) Latyrx (composed of the duo of Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker. Lyrics Born is another unappreciated and highly talented artist, check out his whole solo album Later That Day, my favorite song on that one is Callin' Out.) DJ Shadow (one of the must revolutionary underground artists of the last decades)
E-40
Eminem
2Pac
NWA (when they were still political)
Singers:
Jack Johnson
Norah Jones
John Mayer
John Legend
in no particular order u2, dmb, oar, get up kids, and neil diamond (the greatest singer/song writer of this or any generation, at least according to saving silverman)
on a side note, if you dig live music like dmb, oar, etc. you can get free, legal, live concert recordings online. certain bands have open taping policies and the shows get traded online. if you arent familiar with them, its not some goofball holding up a cheap microphone or something. they have got some pretty sophisticated equipment and sometimes the shows are pulled from the soundboard. you will find the occasional crappy recording but many of them are good to outstanding quality (the newer recordings anyway).
two places to start out:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php the live music archive hosts a whole bunch of mostly smaller named bands. you download the shows directly from the website. format is usually in .shn or .flac (lossless or virtually lossless compression formats).
http://www.furthurnet.org/ furthur is a program. its sort of like a legal napster except it can only be used to download shows that meet the specified criteria (band has an open taping policy). formats include mp3 and shn.

Just out of curiosity, what's your favorite Zeppelin album? Physical Graffiti is one of the most amazing rock recordings I've ever heard. It's almost surreal to listen to it, even to this day...it sounds brand new.
