Padres sign veteran Beck
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres signed 34-year-old right-handed pitcher Rod Beck Monday and optioned righty Charles Nagy to Triple-A Portland.
Beck went 1-1 with a 0.59 ERA in 21 games with Triple-A Iowa, a Chicago Cubs affiliate, but was released on Saturday. Beck, who missed the entire 2002 season after he underwent "Tommy John" surgery, last threw in the majors with Boston in 2001.
Over his long career, Beck has played in 643 games and has recorded 266 saves. He has completed five seasons of 30-plus saves, highlighted by a 51-save campaign in 1998 while with the Cubs.
Nagy, the former ace of the Cleveland Indians, made five appearances for the Padres and went 0-2 with a 4.38 ERA.
