What's goin' on with Manny?

I love the fact that Manny gets off to a slower start than usual and all of a sudden the "he was declining last year" trolls come out. If someone had actually checked the numbers for 2004:

So, exactly where was this falloff? He hit 290+ in every month except the last where a not to shabby 275 was posted. Almost every player has an off month and if 275 is the worst it got I hardly see any pattern. This looks like a case of trying to read something into the numbers that does not exist to try to explain a slow 05 start. You would have a better argument using a suspicion of roids or his mother's illness.

First of all, I said he'd continue to hit for power. My point was directed at his BA. 290 is very good but far below his historical average and a drastic decline from his prior months in 2004. No matter how you slice it, he dropped off considerably after the first half last year, and has continued to slide in the first 1/3 of 2005.

He might turn it around, but he'll have to reverse seven months of declining BA. I don't like those odds.

He was still a .264 hitter last year after the all star break. There is no way around that fact.

I think that there's no cause for concern for Manny. It's still early enough that a hot two weeks can get his average up to .275, and three home runs makes his numbers look completely different. He'll be fine, and I think benching him is premature.

Also, when looking at the second half of last year, the fourteen games in the playoffs might be worth counting too...

I think there is a definite sign of regression but it's not significant.

Manny will still be a Top 5 OF at years end. Expect him to get back on track tonight with a HR and 4 RBI's.

He's always consistent year to year. he will hit over .300 with 35 HRs and over 100 RBIs.

Well, he just broke out of his little Hr slump with a 2 run blast tonight. Showing signs of life allready.
