Trevor Hoffman - bad news?

Postby kswiss » Mon Jun 02, 2003 4:38 pm

I read this off of Yahoo today:

May 30 The San Diego Union-Tribune's Bill Center reports San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman (shoulder) is recovering slowly from two off-season shoulder surgeries. The best scenario was his return around the All-Star Break, but that definitely won't happen and it's likely he will miss the entire season.

Is it time to give up all hope for him?

Unless you have a free DL slot that you don't need for other purposes, I'd dump him. The Padres aren't going to be anything other than a last place team this year, so they have no reason to risk rushing Hoffman along.

I live in San Diego and read that article. It said that Trev wanted to come back sometime in August, but then it quoted the trainer going "there is no chance were taking a risk by playing Trevor again this year. At best he will be in good condition next year and we can put this year behind us"

I forgot to add -
That same article also talked about Phil Nevin and it said hes recovering well above schedule. He was on waivers in my league so i picked him up and DL'ed him. I think hes going to come back strong and he could be a great pickup for you if hes on waivers in your league.

A Padres official confirmed in March that the club expects to recoup more than $5 million on Hoffman's $9 million salary this season, plus part of the $4.5 million due Phil Nevin, who could return in August.
That's all I recall reading recently.

Here's a link to the article. It's not exactly how i remembered it, but still what i said was generally true. The GM is the guy who said don't count on his return, not the trainer, but same deal. As for Nevin, it must have been another article I read (which I will look for) because hes not really mentioned in this one.
