Mattingly the Hitting Coach

Postby Apollo » Tue Jun 07, 2005 7:54 pm

There was a thread a short time ago where it was suggested the Boss would fire Don Mattingly as hitting coach, and everyone jumped on Steinbrenner for even considering such a thing.

Well, I don't know much about Mattingly, but I thought SI's article on A-Rod a week back made him look pretty stupid...

Amid these distractions Rodriguez developed a mechanical flaw in his swing in which he wrapped his wrists as they moved back to a cocked position.

"He was like that in spring training," New York hitting coach Don Mattingly says, "and because he was new to us, I thought, Well, maybe this is how he does it. But as [he struggled]--two, three months--I decided, O.K., maybe this isn't right."

The first thing that occurred to me as I read this was "Mattingly, you idiot, why didn't you look at some tape?" To think it took two or three months for Mattingly to realize this wasn't right when he could've just looked at tape of A-Rod in Texas... Well, it makes me kinda frustrated that I had to endure A-Rod's down season on a couple fantasy teams last year. :*)

Mattingly should have stayed retired. Any other hitting coach would have been fired by George by now and deservedly so. George likes Mattingly, but how long can this nonsense be allowed to continue? You can't fire the players so...

Gotta think if they get swept by the Brew Crew (albeit the much improved Brew Crew), AFTER being swept by the Royals, someone's head is on the chopping block. Maybe it's Mattingly?

What a load of poop :-°

These guys are PROFESSIONAL hitters, some future hall-of-famers, who have been hitting a baseball for 20-30 years.

You got to be kidding me
