Nice to see a guy with this much upside drop to the Tigers. Cam has 5-tool potential, and everyone's been comparing him to Ken Griffey Jr.

I'm pretty happy with this pick. It's nice to see a top hitting talent drafted after we've went mostly pitchers lately. Unlike our last couple of 1st round hitters, this guy can play the field. Munson and Moore were drafted knowing that they probably couldn't handle the positions they were drafted for, and were questionable draft choices before they even officially became dissapointments (although Moore is looking a little better since the trade for Farnsworth). Hopefully he signs without problems and makes steady progress in the minors over the next few seasons. Just for future reference, here is Baseball America's scouting report for Maybin:

10. Tigers: Cameron Maybin, of, T.C. Roberson HS, Arden, N.C.
Maybin has a rare combination of premium athletic ability, bloodlines and baseball savvy. He has broad shoulders and long limbs and fingers, and physically evokes comparisons on the low end to Preston Wilson and on the high end to Vladimir Guerrero. He should be a premium defender in center field with experience, with long, graceful strides gobbling up turf and an average arm. Some scouts think his bat might take time to develop once he starts seeing good breaking balls consistently. His makeup—including good work habits, maturity and love for the game--endears him to scouts.

I usually don't put much creedence into a Tiger first round pick, but I am excited about this kid. They actually drafted someone who isn't a one trick pony. He has all makings of a major league prospect in any organization.

Maybe this will finally end the futile draft strategy of Tiger past, which seemed to be to try and grab guys who are projected as potential role players or reaches who will sign cheap.
