The jays surprised no one by drafting RR, but does anyone have any scouting info on this kid?

For the second year in a row the Jays took the best lefty in the draft. He was #1 or #2 on their list depending on who you talk to. They were also interested in a catcher who was taken before the Jays picked so they were happy to get Romero.

He has a low 90s fastball. A great record 14-4 in 155 IP with CAL state Fullerton. 126 SO with a 1.21 WHIP. He was also impressive with the US national team. He's still young and if he progresses on schedule I would look for him by 2008-2009. The Jays are stockpiling a ton of great arms. Their minor league system has to be one of the tops for pitching.

According to JP, they had two guys targetted - RR and Troy Tulowitzki, a SS out of Long Beach State. Glad that RR was available, cuz with Adams and Hill already on the roster, they may not have needed a young SS.

Also sounds like RR will be signable (they passed on other highly-ranked pitchers who are Boras clients).

According to RR:

"I want to get a deal as soon as possible," said Romero, who has never been to Canada. "I just want to be out there facing hitters, competing. That's what I love to do. I want to try to be in the big leagues as soon as possible."

From what I've heard about this kid is he has a very proffessional attitude and will be easy for the coaches to work with. I think it was a good pick.

Romero agrees to a contract with the Jays.

They introduced Romero at the Game against Milwaukee on Friday June 17. Got a fairly good ovation.
