I was a bit surprised too. Who relieves a knuclkeballer with a starter? They could have just kept Wakefield in all night and punted the game. Bring Mantei, Timlin over even Trot Nixon in.

it's probably a day he was scheduled to pitch on the side anyway, besides, after his last performance he really needed to get another inning or two in.
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll drown because you forgot to teach him to swim.

with the way wakefield's been pitching, I'd be very surprised if Arroyo's the one that goes to the pen wen schilling gets back.

I think this is likely the case.

I was at the game and he was just scheduled for a side session anyway and since he didn't even get past the 3rd inning in his last start, they figured they might as well get him in the game.

Not a chance. Wakefield never pitches in relief unless it's the playoffs (and we saw how that turned out one year).
Why would anyone ever want a knuckler in relief? The last thing you want in late innings is a guy who, because of the type of pitch he throws, puts a lot of men on base.
Francona has no clue what he's going to do when schilling comes back. I honestly see a trade happening before either Arroyo or Miller are relegated to relief.
