Valverde???? Any thoughts

Postby acsguitar » Wed Jun 01, 2005 12:09 pm

Ok Bruney is terrible Lyons is probably done for a long time. Is it worth keeping Valverde...He seems to pitch fine for 3 days then gets rocked for 3 days. Any chance of him getting the job and any chance of him not immeditely losing the job to Cormier or something?

Geez I really want to drop him or M. Gonzalez but I can't decide...Valverde's ERA is 7 he's let up 6 hits and 4 er's in the last 3 innings

What a coincidence. I've got both of these guys as well, and have been struggling with the idea of dropping one (I could really use another SP, but the wire in my 14-teamer is pretty picked over).
Thing is, I've already got Lyon on DL and believe Valverde will ultimately supplant Bruney as closer, so he's something of an insurance policy.
Gonzalez could be the closer-in-waiting if Mesa is dealt/blows up; on the other hand, Gonzo's numbers aren't remotely close to the K/BB and ERA machine he was a year ago. Don't know what's up there, but since we count holds I'll probably stand pat for a little longer.

This is a common misconception. Gonzalez is arbitration eligible after this season. Pitt would be STUPID to turn him to a closer.

Even if Mesa got hurt (that would be the only scenario in which he won't be Pitt's closer), I would expect someone other than MGon to take over the closing duties.
