You know, we never talk about one key factor in pitching and starting certain pitchers; the umpire. Given, if you are a good pitcher, this won’t matter. But I was watching Maddux last night and he was fanning the corners like a pro and wasn’t getting the calls. For example, he had a series of three pitches that were clearly strikes. He knew it, the announcers knew it, but the umpire didn’t budge and called the balls. Yet, when he threw low, the umpire was calling everything an inch off the ground a strike. Then I flipped to the Braves and Davies was pitching. Again, the umpire was calling some pretty bad balls that were clearly strikes. And I got to thinking…
…Is it possible for us to start a collaborative list of umpires behind the plate and rank their skills? There are certainly veterans out there who call games wisely and fair. So, that said, let’s get a list together of some of the top umpires who are beneficial/not to a pitcher. I know it sounds silly but it would be interesting to see everyone’s take – especially the wicked smart fantasy ball players on these boards who have been around for some time. Just a thought…
