Former major league pitcher Rick Helling impaled by bat

Steve Yeager was hit by a piece of a splintered bat through the throat while in the on-deck circle I think in 1976. That was unot pretty. When he returned to playing, he was wearing that neck-flap guard hanging off the bottom of his catchers' mask that most catchers adopted. He may have patented it.

They just announced on Milwaukee radio that Helling is expected to make his next minor league start. What a trooper.

Baseball is going to have to require some minimum staandard in
their bats to cut down on bats shattering like they are. Somebody
is going to get killed or blinded. The head of the bat stuck in
Helling's forearm, imagine if it had cut his artery.
