"Dempster saves third, embraces closer role
The News
Cubs closer Ryan Dempster tossed a perfect inning in route to his third save of the season on Monday against the Astros.
Our View
Following his third save, the Cubs told Dempster that the closer job is his for the rest of the season. So despite a healthy Joe Borowski and the constant rumors that they could trade for closer, Dempster emerges as the king of the hill? We still have a feeling this situation is developing."

Haha. As if no one saw this coming?
Basically, as some have been saying all along around here: Dempster is going to have to lose the job for Borowski to get it. He's only had a short audition, but this bodes well for those that snatched him up while the Borowski owner's just laughed.

I have been saying this ever since they gave dempster the job. Borowski is barely hitting 89mph and that is just not going to get the job done in the 9th inning, that being said Dempster is not exactly eric gagne or even danny baez but he has been decent so far in the closer role and it is hi job to lose. I told everyone when dempster was named closer, he was going to keep it unless he absolutely sucked, and dempster does suck so at any point he could blow up but Joe Borowski is not the answer, and people who thought Jobo was gonna be the guy or be effective, i have said all year...............u are wrong.
maybe dempster keeps the job and runs with it?
maybe he blows up and the cubs trade for someone?
or maybe danny graves becomes the cubs closer, lol.
but one thing is for sure and that is borowski is no real threat to dempster's job right now.
For once, I agree with Du(mb)sty. Considering how miserable this pen has been the last two seasons, you may as well ride a hot hand. However, I still see Borowski entering the mix at some point, as Dempster has shown little staying power the last few years.
I think this is a good move. Dempster has pitched decently his last few outings and there's no reason to fix it if it's working. JoBo just doesn't have closer stuff right now. Keeping Dempster as the closers works out very well. Unless he gets bombed a few times.
the cubs fans were going nuts and rooting dempster on, they acted like ryan dempster was their savor (maybe he is)
Dempster might just take the job and run with it, he has good-decent stuff and strikes out a lot of guys, he will always have his share of crap outings, but in this closer role, he only needs 3 outs, and a lot of guys have been converted from crappy-decent starters into decent-good closers.
so ryan dempster might just do it.
if he keeps the job all year he might finish with
35 saves
3.75 ERA
1.25 whip
lot of strikeouts
