I don't believe he is officially yet. With guys like Casey & Randa slumping recently, I believe he's been picking up playing time, but I don't believe he has offically replaced Jiminez at 2B yet. I thought I read he should replace Jiminez any day now given the Reds struggles and Freel having the teams best OBP.
He seems to be in pretty good favor right now ... yesterday he started in right field while Kearns sat (this can't be good news for Kearns owners; him sitting even when Pena is on DL).
Anyway, Freel seems to be Miley's preferred leadoff option due to his OBP and speed, so unless he goes into an extended slump I'd expect him to continue to get regular at-bats.
I like Freel a lot. I think he'll play almost every day in one position or another, and on the days he doesn't, it's a good chance he'll get you a steal during the late innings. I'm hoping for great things! But, I'm an owner, so grain of salt that.
I agree. Freel adds a spark to the lineup that manager Dave Miley loves. They have been finding ways toget him more playing time. He won't have a set position, but he will start most games for the Reds, making him a good pickup if you need steals
He's playing 5 out of 6 games and usually getting pinch hitting or pinch running in games he doesnt play so he could still get steals in those games, which is where all of his value comes from. I consider him a full time guy now because he is getting lots of playing time since Wily Mo is out and Jimenez is playing terribly. He will continue to get playing time because there is a strong possibility that Griffey or Kearns get injured or someone gets traded. And then there is always the possibility that someone else gets injured. Im not cheering for something like this to happen, Im just saying that it does.
Freel has been great since I grabbed him off the WW. I traded Giles away early in the season and was forced to hit the WW for a second baseman. So I've been platooning Freel and Aaron Miles (play Miles when he's in Col, Freel every other game). It's been working great and Freel just keeps getting on base and stealing. Freel owners have gotta love it!
He can be a very good asset if he would just get the nod each day. Maybe this will happen soon or once the realize that he is a better start than 2 guys I can think of on the team
