MLB ERA leaders...

Here is the top ten SPs in terms of ERA so far in 2005:

Dontrelle Willis
Roger Clemens
Kenny Rogers
Brett Myers
Mike Hampton
Brian Moehler
Erik Bedard
Jon Garland
Josh Beckett
Mark Redman

Now, I'll give you Beckett and Clemens. Some people predicted a bounce-back year for Dontrelle, and if I remember right there were a few people on the Brett Myers bandwagon in ST. But honestly, who could have fathomed the top ERA list would look like this?

This is why I'm punting pitching on draft day next year. First 12 picks, all offense. It will work like a charm

Pitching stats are interesting beasts. Small sample size plus ERA being a poor way to quantify the good pitchers will make for a funky leader list.

If you took the 10 highest ranked SP's (in 5x5), you will get this list...

Willis
Pedro
Clemens
Santana
Myers
Halladay
Peavy
Garland
Beckett
Bedard

See how much better that is?

Yeah, I generally rate pitchers more by WHIP and K/9 than ERA. Those categories are less corruptible by a small sample size.

Top 10 WHIP Leaders (minimum 30 IP)
P. Martinez
D. Willis
J. Santana
R. Clemens
B. Myers
J. Garland
M. Hampton
J. Marquis
J. Peavy
M. Prior

Well, I wasn't by any means saying that those were the top ten pitchers in baseball. I understand that ERA isn't by any means a good category to rate the effectiveness of a pitcher by. I just saw that leaderboard and thought it was interesting.

Also, ERA can fluctuate a lot since pitchers only pitch 32 times in a season. We are not even 2 months into the season so these hot starters will cool off at some point. We'll compare this to the leaders att he end of the season.
