I was just wondering why some hitters have the position "util" on yahoo? I picked up Durazo the other day to fill in but I noticed that I can only place him under the position "util". I don't get why? I realize that most of them DH on their team but then how come players like Hafner who's their daily DH player get a position?

Hafner played 11 games at 1B last year
Durazo played only 4
I'm not sure what the exact limit is but they gain a position when they reach a certain amount of games there. UTIL is basically yahoo's version of the DH - because you can play any position (or none at all in this case)
I don't think there is a player with only UTIL eligibility that doesn't DH
If there is I wouldn't know how to explain that one.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. -Crash Davis

I think it's something like 5 starts or 10 appearances to gain eligibility at a position. So that means Durazo *just* missed it...
And I think you're exactly right about the UTIL spot.

oh 1 more question. Is Frank Thomas a full-time DHer? Do you think he'll gain a position eligibility when he comes back?

Good question... But I'm pretty sure he'll be full-time DH. His ankle seems anything but sturdy, and I'm sure the Sox are hesitant to have him running anywhere that's not from one base to another, and hopefully even then it would be at the leisurely homer jog pace.

It seems possible though, say if a platoon player makes 9 appearances at a bunch of random positions without gaining eligibility anywhere. Heh.

The one I couldn't comprehend was Garrett Atkins, who was only eligible at CI (but not 1B or 3B) earlier this year. How the hell is that possible???
He played didn't play enough at 1B or 3B to qualify for either, but played enough combined games to qualify for CI. Kind of funny if you think about it.
Also, I'm pretty sure that the standard for Yahoo! is 5 games started at a position... might be different if they make a defensive substitution.
