How long do you keep keeper players in your leagues?

i'm in a 3 yr. keeper league and it seems to be working well for us thus far. always becomes interesting around the trade deadline, teams trading their top notch players to teams in the playoff run for a keeper or two for next season. works great with the auction since good players can slip to late rounds and picked up for mere pennies. we have to pay the keepers salary + $5 to keep him for the next season.

I'm in a keeper league where we keep 5 every year. It keeps going. Through trades, I've got to choose for next year 5 out of this group:
Pujols
Beltran
Abreau
Santana
Pedro
Hudson
Jeter
M. Young
Nathan
Rivera

As of now, I'm going with the first 5 I named.

In a draft league, keeping indefinitely makes sense to me. It's not too often that guys like Pujols come along and suddenly dominate the league, so it's not easy to find those guys, even if you were playing for a few years down the road.

However, in an auction, having contracts with a fixed length makes sense to me. However, I think I'd be a homer enough to put in a special rule where the current owner got to bid, but payed $2 less if he won the auction or somethign like that... the free agent deciding he'd rather stay with his team than leave for more money

I'm in a 3yr keeper league. 12 teams, 23 players per team and you can protect only up to 8 players every year. I like this setup because, as mentioned in other posts, it allows different people a chance to win every year. If one guys manages to get a stacked team via trade, luck, skill or a combination of those and then can keep his team indefinitely it basically makes you want to not be in that league since you know you've got almost no shot from day 1. I like the fact that it also adds the element of contract length to any deals, giving you one more thing to think of makes it just a little more interesting.

Some owner in our league said that most keeper leagues that he knows of keeps "keeper players" for 3 years.

I think that keepers should be kept as long as you want them. Does your league have limits?

3 yr cycle nl only has worked well for our long time league
