Oh, I had no idea. I thought all branches were pretty strapped for recruits.

Navy and Air Force are doing fine in the recruiting dept. Army and Marines on the other hand... :-D

I believe the bonuses for joining the Army or Marines is much better for obvious reasons.

Actually the reserves are doing more deployments than the active duty these days.

Simpsons, now there is a good reference to make a career decision by.... :-t

Guess what else gets a thumbs down? Morons who think simpsons references are serious. :-t
Though the Navy is by far the safest out of all military branches, since our Navy is pretty much uncontested. When was the last direct naval combat between the US Navy and an opposing force? World War II? :-D I would not think he would be in much danger at all. And the buildup by China and such is all theoretical also. I think you are worrying too much. If it was the Army Reserve or something, I'd be a bit more worried. But the chance of wherever he is assigned on a ship being in direct combat is unlikely. Its certainly a different way to learn a living, but I would say some professions right now are more dangerous than being in the Navy (miner/tunnel digger, iron worker, etc)

As a family member of course you should be concerned...as for me I will never ever ever join the Army due to many moral objections...if he really wants to then you have to respect that but again as a family member he should respect your thoughts and take that into account as well...

will it be worth the family trouble?

Anyways good luck
I'm too lazy to make a sig at the moment

it will be worth the trouble. there isn't a cohesive train of thought going on and i'll leave it at that. his medical history should get him a big Heisman, but in times like these there is the incetive to reach a bit lower or overlook certain 'inconveniences'. as much as i love the military and wht they do for us, i do not trust 8 out of 10 words they utter. 9.5 of 10 for recruiters.

The Navy kicks ass, that's all there is to it. My friend has enlisted into the Navy in exchange for them paying for his college(over 25 grand for 4-5 years!!), and I do not fear for his life at all. Granted, when he finally joins the Navy, the Iraq conflict will be over, but I highly respect him for doing what he thinks is right.
