33 major military bases on the chopping block

Postby Pogotheostrich » Fri May 13, 2005 10:31 am

Among the major closures were Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico, which would lose more than 2,700 jobs, the Naval Station in Ingleside, Texas, costing more than 2,100 jobs, and Fort McPherson in Georgia, costing nearly 4,200 jobs.

I live near Scott AFB which compared to some others is pretty small but it is one of the largest employers in the STL metro area. I realize that this needs to be done but I feel for those communities.

I'm guessing Scott was spared, right?

Yes. :-°
Here is a list of the closings broken down by state. Most are reserve stations.

I just saw that on the local news today at lunch. They reported that Ft Knox was going to lose something like 3000 and Ft Campbell something like 1500? 8-o I must have misunderstood what they were saying but that seems like an awful lot.

I live in an area that is all military and tourism, and one of our bases was closed and the big air force base lost some jobs too. Sucks because if we lose too much military the economy in the area would be screwed.

our main base got 490 more jobs, not losses. the DFAS in town shut down though.

I feel for people who lose their jobs but the air force employs too many people as it is for the amount of work they do. 90% of my friends are either in the air force or are civilians employed on base and they barely work 7 hours a day, get tons of time off and they even tell me that half the time they are not doing anything but surfing the internet because they are given a month to complete a job that only takes them a week. I was tempted to joing the air force myself to have an easier life style until I realized I would have to move every 3 years. :-D

I understand budgets and all, but how does this President think this will help stengthen our defense system? If we don't have money to keep most of these places open, then we need to figure that problem out before we worry about some of these other issues.
