It's almost like they didnt want to disappoint Giants fans because they had already lost Barry so they forced Schmidt to pitch through injury and now it could be serious. :-t This sucks

Giants place ace Jason Schmidt on DL

The Associated Press

Updated: 6:03 p.m. ET May 10, 2005SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants placed ace right-hander Jason Schmidt on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right shoulder, the latest injury to a San Francisco star this season.

Schmidt joins slugger Barry Bonds and closer Armando Benitez on the disabled list for the Giants, who began the day in fourth place in the NL West.

Bonds has been sidelined all season with an injured right knee and could miss at least half the season. Benitez had an operation last week on his torn hamstring and is expected to miss at least four months.

Schmidt struggled in his last start, allowing six runs, six hits and six walks in 3 2-3 innings against Washington. The walks were his most since Aug. 15, 2002, when he issued seven against Atlanta.

Schmidt, an 18-game winner last season, is 2-1 with a 4.71 ERA and hasn't won since April 10 against Colorado.

The Giants recalled right-hander Scott Munter from Triple-A Fresno to take Schmidt's roster spot. Munter was 1-3 with a 5.11 ERA in 12 relief appearances at Fresno.

The move is retroactive to Sunday.

Well, I just traded for Schmidt today and I can honestly tell you I am pleased by this news.

Yes, pleased.

I knew he was injured or fatigued or that something was wrong with his arm when I traded for him. I'm glad they're sitting him down and letting him try to recover from it instead of throwing him to the wolves with consecutive starts at Houston and Colorado.

The only thing I'm slightly worried about is if it's a long term injury, which it may be.

I mean, did you Schmidt owners really want him to keep pitching the way he was the last few starts? Why have a guy like that in your lineup? Hopefully this is the first step to him getting his health (and his numbers) back.

Schmidt kept saying he wasn't hurt, but it seems he was just kidding. What a funny guy.

I guess how long he will be out depends on what they mean by "strain". Anyone know anything else? i.e. muscle? is it inflammation? Then you can put a timetable on it.....
