Tim Stauffer made two phone calls to his parents, Becky and Rick, on Sunday.
His first phone call was to tell his mother "Happy Mother's Day." About five hours later, he called back to give his mother one of the nicest present any parent would be proud to get -- news that he is being called up to the major leagues.
The newest San Diego Padres pitcher will make his debut on Tuesday in Cincinnati. He will pitch against former Yankees pitcher Brandon Claussen
Stauffer has been the Padres' top prospect since being pick No. 4 in the 2003 amateur entry draft. Through the minor-league system last year, Stauffer started in 28 games where he compiled a 11-5 record with a 2.89 ERA and 113 strikeouts over 168.0 innings
This season for Portland, Stauffer has started in six games with a 2-0 record, 2.33 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 38.2 innings.
I love it when the Cafe beats Rotoworld with these "Breaking Stories"
Thanks for the heads up wrv. This guy IMO is the real deal, so it'll be interesting to see him pitch in a homer friendly park for his first start. Get ready to burn a medium waiver if you have one, but I'd pass on him at this point if you have a top one, as there may be better pitcher's called up later in the year a la King Felix Hernandez.
Forget the man crush. I drop what I'm doing to watch Zack Greinke pitch.

Once again Yahoo is behind the ball on these things, they cost me Burgos earlier in the year, and now they'll probably cost me this guy too, if he's any good.
I've been waiting for him. We are able to sign a guy and keep him up to 6 years, so I would love to get him at the league minimum in our league.
If he would have been available in our preseason auction, he would have probably cost a few bucks, but now that everyones rosters are filled up, he might go very cheap, I hope.
probably not a 10 team yet ...
since he is a rookie, he will have his good games and his bad games. In a 10 teamer your roster are allmost all allstar rosters
