i've never understood the whole "awareness" thing. i can't imagine that someone asked about a player's wristband and someone said "its for breast cancer awareness" and the other person replied "oh, what's that? is it bad?"

It's more to show that MLB supports/encourages those who have, or had, the disease.
I think the Red Sox should have worn pink socks to show their support.
Roger Angell: I was talking with Bob Gibson and I said: 'Are you always this competitive?' He said: 'Oh, I think so. I got a three-year old daughter, and I've played about 500 games of tic-tac-toe with her and she hasn't beat me yet.'
Dusty just said Mother's day in the pregame spiel he did on the radio. I was on the road for the game and caught it. It would perhaps have been a nicer touch to make the statement about the disease I think. Oh well...

that's my point. who doesn't encourage/support them, or any other person with a particular cancer, AIDS, etc.?

lol, I think you're taking it too literally. It's just a sign of appreciation...I don't think it was meant to be analyzed with so much depth.
