But, his loss of velocity and location has me worried. Those two problems coincide with a health problem. Normally I wouldn’t be too concerned, but this just wasn’t one bad game he had. He’s basically been pitching like this all season.

You can point to his past couple of seasons and say that he wasn’t pitching too stellar in the first couple of months. However, his velocity was still up.

I’m concerned and I think he bears some close watching in fantasy leagues.

I didn't and I totally agree. I'm in a points league and in 1st, so far, but I didn't take a pitcher until the 13 or 14th round.

I think it depends on the situaion but I agree that in general, pitching is a lot tougher to predict.

One general rule I've followed in recent years is to take pitchers who throw strikes. I use K/BB and K/9 IP, look for improvements in those categories.

See, that would apply if anyone had taken Schmidt in the first round. Thing is, a majority of the people took him in the late 2nd or early 3rd. At least from what I've seen. But this reeks of arm problems. Not good. Not good at all. WHy didn't I take Prior instead

In my H2H league I took Lidge in the 5th. Beckett, Moose and Livan in rounds 9 thru 11. 2nd of 12 teams there. Pitchers are much more hit and miss to me. Seems like every year there are more breakout FA pitchers than hitters available. I generally try to sell high on guys and get my ptichers that way.
