4 OFs, if you have to start 3 and one util is a fine strategy -- take the best player availabe that you can start in the first 10 rounds (and sorry, beltran, manny, edmonds LAST YEAR? thats a solid core)

Not giving up on this year already, are you? It's still very early.
Anyway, I use a combination of best availiable and position scarcity. Completley ignoring position scarcity isn't something I'd suggest anyone try. It can get pretty messy.

I always go best player available for at least the first five rounds, position being immaterial. Note that this is only if we're talking about a no brainer type sitting out there in, for example, round three or four. Otherwise, you're probably looking at similarly rated guys in those rounds, in which case the more premium position is the tie breaker.
the thing is, with those 4of's, they can cover up a lot of holes elsewhere, considering you are still likely to get someone decent for first and third.
how many rounds will you go before you start to pick for position purposes, e.g. a catcher or a shortstop? soriano is good, but i don't think he merits a first round pick. yet, he probably got picked in the first round for 80% of the drafts because he is the best 2nd baseman, with a dropoff later. also, when do you pick for categories, e.g. picking PODS or dave roberts just for sb...

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll drown because you forgot to teach him to swim.

Who cares. 16 games. Whoopee. Big deal.
Just a friendly shot.

Something similar that I've noticed throughout the years in my league, is that the top offensive teams treat their UTIL position just as they would any other. I've learned from experience and done the same thing this season.
I took Morneau in the 8th even though at that point I already had Hafner at first, and hadn't yet drafted a closer, 2B, 3B, or C, and only had two starting pitchers. Having two solid first basemen in my line-up seems preferable to having a better 2B or C. I took Glaus in the 13th round, so third is solid for me until the impending injury. Belhorn (14th) and Cuddyer (20th) have been terrible at second base for me, but the best second basemen available at that point were Figgins, Vidro, and Boone, and the best catcher Posada. I don't regret adding Morneau to my starting line-up over having one of those players replace Belhorn/Cuddyer or Kendall.
