How did Lance Berkman look Friday night?

Postby yossarian » Sat May 07, 2005 1:51 am

Did anybody see the Astros game? I know it's his first game back and he went 0-4, but can anybody tell me how he looked? He didn't get any Ks, so how was the contact on his at bats? Should I bring him off the bench for Saturday.

Sorry...I didn't know if I should put this in this forum or the "Who to Start/Bench" forum, as it's kind of related to Berk's injury AND whether or not I should play him.

Thanks in advance for any answers guys.

I didn't watch the game but saw one highlight where he lined out to center. Had a solid hit, just right at the center fielder.

Well, his other 3 ABs were weak groundballs. Definitely looked rusty to me as he didn't seem to have as much authority in his swing as in the past.

Berk

I think I'm going to take a risk and start him. I'm benching Barmes to shuffle the lineup and move Berk in, since Barmes is facing Beckett today. I kinda feel like Barmes is gonna have another 0 fer, so I don't really have anything to lose. Right?

I'd sit Berkman until he gets back into the swing of things...it shouldn't take long but I wouldn't bench Barmes to get him in just yet. I personally started him last night and watched most of the game - I'm not starting him today.

Just a heads up :

I watched some of Berkman's at-bats today (Saturday) and he did not look comfortable in the box. I'm not an expert, but it seemed like he was just throwing his arms at the ball. He'll get it sorted out sooner or later.

Berkman didn't do much against Ramirez today, but he doesn't hit lefties as well as he hits righties (.264/.386/.412 vs. lefties, .309/.433/.594 vs. righties over the last 3 years).

He had a ground-rule double against RHP Chris Reitsma in the 8th.
Roger Angell: I was talking with Bob Gibson and I said: 'Are you always this competitive?' He said: 'Oh, I think so. I got a three-year old daughter, and I've played about 500 games of tic-tac-toe with her and she hasn't beat me yet.'
