Today, Padres win 6-5. First run of the game came like this:

Roberts singles to right, steals second. Loretta moves him over on a groundball. Klesko knocks him in on another groundball.

So, yeah, you don't need stolen bases to win baseball games, but they certainly give a team a nice addition.

The Angels, Orioles, and White Sox are 2-4 in steals in the entire majors. Has turned out pretty nicely so far.

Beltran's success rate is so absurdly high that there shouldn't be much of a relationship between where he bats in the order and how many attempts he gets. Conventional wisdom says you don't run yourself out of a scoring opportunity, but that's just not an issue with him. Hell, i got him with the 8th pick (+OPS) and I'm still feeling hugely cheated.

not to thread jack, but Kaz Matsui has not been running either and the talk early was that he was going to be a good value for a 2nd baseman due to his steals. Willie has the concrete galoshes on these guys.

I still think Beltran will end up with 20+ steals but those owners who were expecting 40 again will be very disappointed.

And this is exactly why I drafted Vlad over him. Vlad's a better hitter, by a considerable margin IMO, and with the possibility Beltran wouldn't run it make Vlad the better pick. Glad I did that

5 tool in real baseball doesn't mean run hrs rbis sbs avg. it means power, defense, arm (throwing out people rounding 3rd and trying to score, keeping what would've been a double into a single cuz the batter respects your arm and doesn't want to try for second, etc), avg, and speed (not the base stealing kind necessarily, it means more like being able to score from 2nd base on a single).

Speed is speed and it's a tool any way it is used. Willy Tavares has speed in the OF. Carl Crawford has speed on the basepaths. It's the same thing.
