Rookie of the Year Talk Update

Postby Arlo on Mon May 19, 2003 8:09 pm

J.P. Steed is analyzing this year's rookie class again, and with roughly a quarter of the season behind us, he's beginning to separate the contenders from the pretenders. Check out the latest Point of View column to see who J.P. considers the cream of the crop! ;-D

Zach Day

Postby Just Visiting on Fri May 23, 2003 5:37 pm

I agree that Zach Day is a great young pitcher. Unfortunately, but correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that he doesn't qualify as a rookie because he's pitched over the limit. That's why he didn't get rookie of the month in April.

Did Hank Blalock use up his rookie status last year? He's a pretty studly stud.

Day and Blalock

Postby jpsteed on Tue Jun 03, 2003 2:06 am

Zach Day pitched 37.1 innings in 2002. A player loses his rookie status when he has accumulated 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched, so Day still qualifies this year as a rookie. (I don't know why he didn't win the rookie-of-the-month honors.) Blalock, on the other hand, surpassed the at-bat limit last year and does not qualify as a rookie in 2003. But that won't stop him from winning the batting title...

Yeah, Blalock had 147 ABs last season. I would love for him to win the batting title. On draft day on of the other owners thought I was an idiot for drafting him. He even said, "Blalock sucks!!". I have the last laugh now!
