B. J. Ryan is NASTY.

I targetted him in both of my main leagues and hes been everything i've expected.

12.2 IP, 5 saves, 2.84 ERA, 11 hits, 4 BB, 21 Ks...very nice

The only problem is that the Orioles have such an explosive offense and have been scoring an extra run or two in the 8th and 9th eliminating the save opp, but Ryan has already warmed up and is still coming in. Overall though this guy has been money in the bank. 2 saves in back to back days ;-D

I got him in a damn fine trade.

I traded JD Drew ('nuff said), Orlando Cabrera (my SS is Rollins, so.. no need for him) and Marquis Grissom

and got:
Jim Edmonds, Ray Durham (helped me in a trade for Peavy), and BJ Ryan

A steal?

Ryan was sure to be a steal in drafts because it was a teeny bit iffy as to whether he was the definitive closer coming out of spring training.
Turns out, the O's were probably just showcasing Julio. Hence, Ryan could be the next Billy Wagner.
His potential for dominance is going to give me a dilemma when Gagne gets back, as I have Dotel, Ryan and Gagne and we can only start two relievers.
The good news is that it is never hard to deal a dominant closer midway through the season.

His K/IP is going to be great all year.

But I think his ratios won't be all that great compared to the elite closers.

I still rank him in the middle tier closers.

His K rate puts him at the bottom of the upper tiers, because when you get Ks like that out of a closer, thats huge. His rats will be respectable also. I wish I had another closer besides him in my 18 teamer though, my MR is him, Rincon, and Madson.

I'm just waiting for people to jump in and say Ryan is unproven. When you convert 5 straight saves to open the season with a 21/4 K/BB and a 2.81 ERA in only 12.2 IP, I'd say you are doing pretty darn well. I'd like to see issue less walks but he hasn't issued one in 7 outings so he should continue to climb into the ranks of elite closers.

He is lefty though... :-°

I picked him in round 6. Closers were going very quickly as they are worth a lot in my points league. Guys who went in rounds 5-6 were Kolb, Izzy, Mota, Percival, and Hoffman. I got Ryan after all of them. I've very happy with my selection. I also have Wagner, so I'm probably playing with fire with all these lefty closers
