Take out one horrible outing which killed his ERA, and Backe has been quite good this year:

25.1 IP / 24 H / 11 ER / 5 BB / 25 K

That includes what he's done tonight: 7-6-3-1-8

A lot of people will see a 5.64 ERA and get scared, but Backe has been a lot better than that, and the Ks are a plus.

Ya he's a good pitcher, I expect him to get better as the season goes on. Not a bad hitter either (for a pitcher), I think he played OF in college or something.

His slider and curve were exceptionally good today.

How does Backe compare to Brian Lawrence?

Probably worth noting that Backe's 'bad' start was @ StL ... hardly any shame in that. I'd actually take him ahead of Lawrence at this point. That opinion is based mostly on upside; with Lawrence you know what you'll get: occasional brilliance interspersed among a lot of mediocre starts.

Id rather have him over Lawrence, hes a good pitcher, hes got very nice breaking stuff and uses it effectively. I never even saw the kid pitch until last year during the postseason and watching that game put him on my sleeper list during the offseason, hes a good pitcher to have on your team.

I drafted him as a 5th/6th starter in a couple of leagues. Here's hoping that he continues to improve. ;-D
