bolkonsky, please enlighten us. What were Ryan, Wagner and Guardado before they became closers?

Isn't this a little unfair? Perhaps it's because only about 10 percent of the population is lefthanded?
Being lefty doesn't preclude you from being a closer simply because there are not many good lefty closers--if you buy that contention.
How about some research? Lefties are more likley to be alcoholics and schizophrenics--maybe that is why they aren't good closers.

His 4.70 ERA right now isn't helping.

On top of what's been said, a good reliever is better than a situational match-up.
The Angles have had the best bullpen ERA in baseball in each of the past three seasons, and don't bother much with lefties. K-Rod is a perfect example. Lefties have hit him 63 points higher in his career, but if they're still only batting .202, who really cares? The Angles pen has been great this season as well. They've allowed four earned runs in their last 39.2 innings and have stranded 22-of-23 runners this season. They've got only one lefty in their pen, a rookie that has thrown a whopping 8.1 innings.
The overrating of the lefthanded specialist allows guys like Jesse Orosco and Aaron Flutz to stay in major league uniforms for seaons longer than they should.
I honestly can't see the Pirates trading Gonzalez though, as its already been said, he's very, very good, and very, very cheap right now.

He's a reliever and it's still April. He's thrown 7.2 innings. This comment is infuriating.

You know, Yoda, if you are going to copy my post and reply to it, then at least reply to it, not a made up quote that I never said.

About 10 percent of the population is lefty.
About 30% of MLB pitchers are lefty.
About 20% of the all-time save leader list is lefty.
I think the bias against lefty closers is more based in tradition than fact.
