Red Sox pitcher Wells may be out a month
April 26, 2005
BOSTON -- Red Sox left-hander David Wells could be sidelined for more than a month after spraining his right foot, Boston manager Terry Francona said Tuesday.
Wells will go on the 15-day disabled list because of the injury, sustained in Monday night's 8-4 loss to Baltimore.
The 41-year-old left-hander was hurt as he tried to field Javier Lopez's slow roller in the fourth inning. Wells hobbled back to the mound but remained in the game for five more batters before leaving.
Left-hander John Halama is to take Wells' spot in the rotation and start next Tuesday at Detroit. Lenny DiNardo will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and replace Halama in the bullpen.
Wells (2-3) gave up six runs and eight hits in 3 2-3 innings Monday. He entered the game with a 15-inning scoreless string over his prior two starts, both Boston shutouts.
